H-BC Secondary Families:

Happy October!  It is hard to believe we already made it through the first month of the school year.  Thank you for making it a successful start to the 21-22 School Year!   Please continue to remind yourself and your students of good hygiene practices as we try to minimize the spread of Covid-19.   Please continue to screen your students before sending your student(s) to school.  (Screener below) Thank you for keeping our students healthy and learning.

A Midterm letter was sent out today to remind you to continue to check JMC to see your student(s)’ grades and more.   Please see the information below to sign up with JMC Family App on your smartphone.  This is a convenient way to see your student(s)’ progress.  I strongly encourage you to get the JMC Family App on your smartphone. 

Also, there is an Early Release on Wednesday, October 6th.  Secondary students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM for Teacher Workshop time.  

Finally, a reminder that Parent/Teacher Conferences are at the Secondary this next week on Thursday, October 7th.  Family Engagement is critical to students’ success at all education levels and I encourage you to come to conferences on Thursday, Oct 7th from 3:45 - 7:15 PM.  (More details below).

Here are some highlights from the week!

HBC Secondary is Career & College Ready! Sophomores & Juniors spent Tues. morning at MN West - Worthington to explore 60+ SW MN employers/schools which are focused on Trades/STEM Careers/military/skilled labor careers available now! From flight simulators to networking - Our students will be ready for Careers & Colleges! 

The HBC Seniors in our Personal Finance class had a chance to learn about finance careers and long term money management from two financial planning experts! Thanks to Kevin Thelen and Vicki Busswitz, both from Edward Jones Finance, for sharing their insight and knowledge with the Personal Finance students.

The HBC High School Conditioning Class walked a total of 11 miles in September. They were also active during class in volleyball, whiffle golf and Frisbee Kan Jam! The 8th Grade Physical  Education classes played the same activities as the high schoolers, but the 8th graders walked a total of 15 miles in September during PE class! Here’s to a healthy lifestyle!

Early Dismissal on Wednesday, Oct 6th (New)

Also, there is an Early Release on Wednesday, October 6th.  Secondary students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM for Teacher Professional Development Time during the afternoon.


Seniors Adopt a Highway - Thursday, October 7 (Repeat)

Our seniors will be giving back to our community by cleaning up our ditches and our community on Thursday, Oct. 7th from 9:40 - 11:05 AM.  Seniors should dress appropriately, bring gloves and wear comfortable shoes.   Thank you seniors for keeping our community clean.


Thursday, October. 7th - Parent/Teacher Conferences Secondary (Repeat) - Please mark your calendars for Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 7th from 3:45 - 7:15 PM.  Conferences will look similar to Open House where parents/caregivers can come and meet with their students’ respected teachers during the 3.5 hour time block.  Teachers will be available to discuss students’ progress during this time.  Please be considerate of other parents/caregivers who may be in the room by patiently waiting outside of classroom until classroom is open.

 

Thursday, October 7th and Tuesday, October 12th - Operating Referendum Public Meetings (New)

FFA Corn Drive - Friday, October 8th (Repeat)

Ms. Anderson, FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher, has been busy planning the FFA Corn Drive which will be on Friday, October 8th during the school day.   FFA Members who have passing grades (C or better) and no missing assignments will be invited to participate.   FFA members will be out in our school community collecting corn, monetary gifts and also providing our farmers with a FREE grilled lunch at New Vision.  If you would like to make a donation, please contact Ms. Anderson at c.anderson@isd671.net

All School Assembly - Cory Greenwood - Your Story Matters / Tackling Tough Subjects and Inspiring Healthy Conversations - Monday, October 11th (New)

All 6th - 12th Grade Students will participate in an all-school assembly on Monday, October 11th.  The assembly will be about: 1. Find positive mentors 2. Engage in Healthy conversations with others about life 3. Being resilient through tough times (adversity) 4. Focus on solutions instead of problems 5. Appreciate others in their life 6. Make positive decisions

BUS SAFETY WEEK:  OCTOBER 3-9 is Bus Safety Week!

Grades 1-6 Volleyball Camp Registration is complete.  Please Note: The Saturday Camp dates are October 23, October 30 and November 6th.   This is a change from the original schedule.

Deficiency Lists for 1st Quarter- (New)

As we emphasize the importance of academics and being well-rounded students, athletes and participants of co-curricular activities, please be reminded that we began our deficiency lists starting for Quarter 1.

The Deficiency List / Academic Eligibility is located in Section 9 of the Secondary Student Handbook (LINK).  

This slide explains the different levels of deficiencies.  Parents and students will receive an emailed letter notifying them if their student is on the deficiency list.  Please continue to support your student who may be struggling with completing school work.

AM BUS CHANGES--For morning bus changes please call or text the bus line--make sure to identify your student and the bus number they are riding:  507-962-3240 Ext. 4.

MASKS ARE REQUIRED ON BUSSES (Repeat):  As you know, students need to wear a masks on the school bus.  We need your assistance.  Please have your child prepared with their mask in the AM and PM bus route.  The district’s supply of Masks is quickly dwindling.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
