H-BC Secondary Families:

Winter sports are starting, we are almost halfway through the school year and winter weather seems to remind us that we do live in Minnesota.   I hope this Secondary Bulletin finds you safe and warm.   As you know, we had another E-Learning Day on Friday, January 15th.   Thank you for encouraging your students to log-in and continue to learn remotely.   The inclement weather also canceled a few basketball games for our Varsity and Jr. High basketball teams.  We do not have make-up games yet.

A reminder that this is the last week of the first semester, students will have till Friday, January 22nd to finish their coursework for the first semester.  This is a great time to view your student’s progress on  JMC (please call office if you need help doing this).   We will devote advisory time this week to use as catch-up time and also the Friday early release for students to have extra time to raise their grades.

Here are some pictures from the past week.

Mr. Louwagie’s 8th Grade Industrial Arts students waiting to see which bridge can withstand the most load/weight.  HBC students research, design, collaborate, compromise, critically think and build the strongest bridge possible. Obviously, their favorite day was DEMOLITION day!

First game of the season.  Our HBC boys basketball team were able to host SWC Eagles this past Saturday.  Though the game didn’t end as we hoped, our boys fought till the end and should be optimistic about the season.  Though limited, it was great to have fans in our gymnasium.

DO NOT FORGET TO SCREEN YOUR STUDENT REMINDER: (Repeat)  Make sure to screen your child everyday, prior to coming to school!  Here is the link for Screener.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

MASKS (Repeat)

Please make sure to send your student with a clean or new mask each day.   To encourage our students to wear their masks properly.  Our staff is going to be handing out G.R.A.D. tickets to our students who are wearing their mask correctly for the next month.   Teachers will be looking for students who…

  1. Keep their mask above their noses

  2. Having a mask that fits properly

  3. Does not have to be reminded for the entire block period

At the end of each week, the students’ tickets will be collected and a winner will be drawn for one of the following prizes

  1. A Patriot Blanket $35 Value

  2. A Donut Party for their class (won)

  3. A Pizza Party for their class (won)

Is Your Student Failing a Class? - Students who are Failing MUST stay after for Early Dismissal - Friday, January 22nd (New)

Parents and Students,

Academic success is critical for graduation and giving students more opportunities after they leave HBC schools after they graduate.  If a student fails a class, your student will need to make up that course (called credit recovery) to earn the necessary credits to graduate.  Students who fail a class will typically make up the class the following school year.   If you are unsure how your student is progressing, please view JMC now to see if your student is passing all of their classes.  If you have questions, please reach out to your student(s)’ teacher(s).

On Friday, January 22nd (Early Release), Jr. High and Sr. High students who are failing a class MUST stay after school during the early release (12:30 PM) to work with their teacher(s) to raise their grade to a passing score.

If your student is failing, both students and parents will receive a notification letter that your student must stay after during each early release.   This letter will come early in the week of January 18th

Please make plans with your student so they can get the extra support they need from our teachers.  Again, please email or call your student(s)’s teacher(s) if you have any questions about your student(s)’ progress.

Deficiency Lists - Starting Quarter 3 (Repeat)

As we stress the importance of academics and being well-rounded students, athletes and participants of co-curricular activities, please be reminded that we will begin our deficiency lists starting for Quarter 3.  Students who are failing will be REQUIRED to stay after school during early releases to improve their grades.

The Deficiency List / Academic Eligibility is located in Section 9 of the Secondary Student Handbook (LINK).

E-Learning Days (Repeat)

Cold Weather and Dressing Appropriately (Repeat)

PLEASE make sure your student is prepared for the colder weather.  Students will be walking to their PE classes which are located at Hugo Goehle Gymnasium which is 6 blocks away if the conditions are NOT slippery or wet.   In most cases, students will walk and need to be dressed for the colder weather.
