HBC

Things are busy, but the 20-21 School Year will conclude on June 2nd (half day for 6-11 graders).  Thank you for your continued support and efforts to keep our students in school and learning.   Here are some pictures from this past week.

The HBC FFA had their Banquet at the Steen Reformed Church on Wednesday.  Good luck NEW officers.

The HBC Boys were named Red Rock Conference Champions on Thursday.

Ms. Wysong’s Algebra II students engineer pasta bridges.  This project is a S.T.E.M. project which requires science, technology, engineering and math.  What a fun way to end school year!

The HBC Music Department performed for the Spring Concert on Friday night.  The Choir, Jazz Band, Band and Drumline, directed by Ms. Comp and Mr. Olson, did a wonderful job.

Next Year 2021-2022 School Year - Modified Block Schedule with Advisory (Repeat from May Newsletter)

COVID has also allowed our staff to look at our schedule differently.  Block scheduling (90 minute periods) has numerous benefits and also some drawbacks.  One complaint about traditional schedules (45 minutes classes for 8 periods in one day) is that it creates short, fragmented class periods which creates confusion and work overload for students and teachers (some students will have 8 different classes during a single day).   The block schedule allows students and teachers to have only 4 classes each day and to go more in-depth for a longer period of time with more time for 1:1 or small group support.

Here are some of the results from the student, teacher and parent schedule survey.

-88% of students feel more successful in a Block Schedule.

-94% of students feel teachers are able to spend more 1:1 time with them in a Block Schedule.

-87% of students feel it is easier to stay organized in a Block Schedule vs. Traditional Schedule.

-67% of parents prefer the Block Schedule vs 24% of parents prefer a Traditional Schedule.

-60% of teachers prefer the Block Schedule.

-60% of teachers feel they are able to go more in-depth with content in a Block Schedule.

-85% of teachers feel advisory (academic check, independent reading, community building, social-emotional learning, current event reading) is valuable.

For the 2021-2022 School Year, HBC Secondary’s schedule will be a Modified Block Schedule which means the majority of the classes will be 90 minute blocks.  However, some classes including PE, Health, Study Skills, Music, Band and some study halls will be 45 minute period classes within a block.   There will also be an IMPROVED advisory program which focuses on weekly academic checks, reading, community/positive school culture and getting 1:1 support for extra help.
