Description of Content:
This course focuses on the study of becoming an active reader by focusing on short stories, poetry, and novels while incorporating vocabulary, grammar, journaling, and the literary elements. The course will also concentrate on developing grammar and vocabulary skills in order to increase writing skills. Active reading will be enhanced through literary analysis, comprehension, critical thinking, and interpretations of selected works.

Outcomes:
a. Understand the importance of being an active reader
b. Increase vocabulary and grammar usage skills along with writing skills
c. Identify the use of literary elements in different literary works.
d. Relate to and reflect on the various literary works through journaling
e. Understand the importance of developing comprehension and critical thinking skills

Content:
Students will read a variety of literary works incorporating literary elements that enhance storytelling characteristics. We will study, from multiple genres, a variety of literary works including short stories, poetry, and novels to understand the importance of being an active reader. Along with each literary work, students will do learning exercises incorporating grammar, vocabulary, journaling, and comprehension and critical thinking questions to expand their overall reading and writing skills. From there students will be able to use these skills in creating a poetry portfolio and composing writing assignments.

Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on exams, quizzes, daily assignments/activities, participation, task management skills, writing assignments, and group work and projects.

ZERO for late work!!
All assignments will be turned in on the required due date at the beginning of class. Work that is not turned in on time will receive no credit.
