Description of Content:
This course focuses on the study of a series
of stories about heroes and superhuman beings,
in this case, the heroes and gods of ancient
Greece and Scandinavia, their customs and
beliefs, and their lifestyles. The course
also focuses on the development and progression
of the English language through early British
literature to modern British literature.
A variety of authors and poets will be examined
in separate time periods.
Outcomes:
a. Appreciate the entertainment factor of
myths
b. Identify references to myths in everyday
life and vocabulary
c. Understand the use of myths as a reservoir
literature for more modern literature
d. Understand the progression and development
of the English language from one time period
to the next
e. Compare and contrast the writing styles
of each period in British literature
f. Identify the differences in author writing
styles and techniques
Content:
Students will read a variety of literature
focusing on the popular myths of Greece
and Scandinavia, epic tales depicting the
theme of good versus evil as well as hardship
of a hero after war. We will discuss myths
as an entertainment aspect and will focus
on identifying modern references passed
on from historic mythology and vocabulary.
Students will demonstrate their appreciation
of mythology by creating a group project.
From there students will identify the transition
of a pagan religion to that of Christianity
through the study of British literature.
We will study a variety of written works
from the Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Renaissance,
Restoration and Enlightenment, Romantic,
Victorian, and the Twentieth Century periods.
By studying different works in each period
students will be able to identify the progression
of the English language through culture
changes and everyday life of the historic
people living during these time periods.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on exams, quizzes,
daily assignments/activities, participation,
task management skills, writing assignments,
and group work and projects.
ZERO for late work!!
All assignments will be turned in on the
required due date at the beginning of class.
Work that is not turned in on time will
receive no credit.
