Description of Content:
This course focuses on the study of American Literature in relation to the novel and the short story. A variety of authors will be examined through the different time periods found in America’s history beginning with the Civil War and ending with the present day. While reading each novel students will focus on the events happening during that specific period in history in order to understand the transition and growth of America.

Outcomes:
a. Compare and contrast different time periods in America through literature.
b. Identify historic events that have shaped America’s culture
c. Understand the use of literature to reflect and express emotions of the people living during a certain time
d. Identify the use of literary elements to create description and reader involvement

Content:
Students will read a variety of American literature novels and short stories beginning during the time of the Civil War and finishing with modern day America. By reading the stories in chronological order students will be able to understand how historic events portrayed through literature have shaped America throughout the years. We will discuss American literature and how our society and culture have shifted or changed from one time period to the next. Students will journal regularly in order to reflect feelings and opinions about specific events and hardships faced by the characters in each novel which will eventually lead to reflection of their own life and society by writing their own composition.

Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on exams, quizzes, daily assignments/activities, participation, task management skills, writing assignments, and group work and projects.

ZERO for late work!!
All assignments will be turned in on the required due date at the beginning of class. Work that is not turned in on time will receive no credit.
