Mrs. Fey's Third Grade Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Well, it’s January 19th and it’s the first super cold day of the winter!  I guess we can’t complain about that!  Thank you for sending snow pants and warm winter gear for your children.  Please be sure to label each item to prevent them from getting lost!  Thanks!
            You’ll notice on your children’s tests that have been coming home there are letter grades at the top.  I will start that on all of their tests and some of their daily work to help transition into the grading in 4th grade.  Hopefully this will make that transition easier.  It’s hard to compare an S+, S, and S- to letter grades, so I’m hoping this will give you a better idea on how they are doing.  The following is the grading scale that our 4th through 6th grade use:

A =100-96          A- =95-94                                    B+ =93-92          B =91-88
B- =87-86           C+ =85-84                                    C =83-80            C- =79-76
D+ =75-73          D =72-65                                    D- =64-61           F =60-0

In math we are finishing up our last chapter on geometry and will then move onto division. We’re hoping pushing the division chapters back have helped to give them more time to master their multiplication facts and, will in turn, make division easier to understand. Thank you for continuing to work on the multiplication calendars at home. I can really tell a difference for those who have been practicing! We are currently working our way through our facts with timed tests. Students have one minute to finish 30 problems. Once they finish twos, they can move onto threes, etc. We will be taking these tests until March 2. At that time those who have passed through 9’s will get to have a meal provided for them and a little party. Keep practicing so we can have everyone attend the party!!

I’m also very excited about the IXL program that we can use. A letter with information was sent home earlier this week and if you have any questions, please let me know! This is such a great way for the kids to practice for our MCA state tests coming up this spring since this site correlates with our state standards. So, the more practice on that site, the better!!

We are reading the book On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The students are loving this and are so interested in their way of life and how different it is from our lives today. We’ve been doing a lot of comparing and contrasting with this. We’ll be continuing this for the next three weeks. They’ve been working so hard in their journals and on the photo album they’re creating. These will be sent home at the end of the unit.

We still have half a year of school left and many of us are in need of replenishing some of our school supplies. Please check with your child and see what they need. Our classroom is currently on its last box of Kleenexes, so if you could donate a box, that would be great!! Thanks for all your help and support from home! Stay warm!!
