Shared Reading/Guided Reading
This month we will be focusing on poems and stories about winter. We will focus on sequencing. We will also continue to work on print concepts (punctuation, visual cues, repeated words), comprehension, vocab words, and fluency. Also, have your child read NIGHTLY!:) I can not stress how important this is when children are learning to read. The more they read, the better readers they will become.
Spelling/Writing
During centers we will be working on the spelling and writing of our sight words for the week with rainbow writing. The sight words for the month will be: my, by, mine, we, me, he, be, see, need, go, so, no, do, and you. We will also be learning about a variety of initial and ending blends. We have a guided writing time when we are focusing on the 6 traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. We will continue to learn about ideas this month. Encourage your child to write at home. The other students and I enjoy reading the books/stories that they write at home. (AND…They are SO proud to read them!:)
MATH
This month we will finish learning about numbers through 100. We will do activities where we count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. (We also count by 3’s and 4’s at calendar time.:) Then we will discuss ordinal numbers and greater than/less than. Have your child continue to add and subtract objects at home, practice their math facts using flashcards, and play games that focus on addition and subtraction. They should be able to add and subtract numbers up to 20. If you would like extra practice sheets sent home, let me know.
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE/HEALTH
We will begin this month learning about Science in our world. This will be an interesting topic because we live in an area where farming is such an important part of our economy. We will begin learning about our Earth and its resources
